This album is already some months old, but I think it�s good enough to deserve this somewhat late review. I always liked the music from Graveworm, which create a powerful mix of melodic death metal with black metal. Their latest weapon on metal surface is Engraved In Black, a somewhat clich� title, but nonetheless very well. The album opens with Dreaming Into Reality, which is a song that inspires by the eerie keyboard work mixed with the ultra heavy bass/guitar and a vocalist that produces a deep and powerful voice, but also doesn�t have any difficulty with a more high pitched scream. Black metal is the overwhelming influence in this song. The same matter with Legions Unleashed, which is a blasting compilation of strong riffs and that mind controlling sound. The little break in the middle is also an ear catcher. Renaissance In Blood is more a ballad like song, believing the introduction of the song, and indeed there aren�t any very blasting riffs in this song, a mood swinging song. Thorns of Desolation begins with a bagpipe like intro, which continues throughout the whole song, an intermezzo which is perfectly timed and perfectly followed by the track Abhorrence, which is a blaster. Losing My Religion is a cover song by R.E.M, and thus produced that it�s totally black metalled, very qualitative work and original as well. Drowned In Fear is fast and blasting with typical Black Metal riffs but after the cover song not a bad choice, would this track have been placed earlier on the album, the boredom would have got the power. Not that this song is sounding bad, it�s just the prolonging of something already heard. Luckily the next song Beauty Of Malice is a welcome tempo and this mid tempo song is quite original due to the nice keyboard work in the middle of the song. The album is closed by Apparition Of Sorrow, which is a totally keyboard produced song with classical influences, a definitive end. Graveworm have produced a strong album that is certainly worth buying, as I did. You sure must like black metal, but if you can suffer some death metal aswell, you should give it a go. This is a masterpiece, which will certainly be spinning many rounds in my player.
